Questions people ask

Can I paste a YouTube link?

No. This converts files you already have on your device — it does not download from YouTube or any other site.

Which files can I drop in?

Audio: MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, Opus, FLAC, AIFF. Video: MP4, MOV, WebM, 3GP — the audio track is taken and the picture discarded. MKV and AVI usually will not work, because browsers cannot read those containers.

Which bitrate should I pick?

192 kbps is the sensible default and most people cannot tell it from the original. 320 kbps is the highest MP3 goes, for archiving or if the file is going to be edited again. 128 kbps is fine for speech and podcasts and makes much smaller files. Below that, music starts to sound obviously thin.

Does converting to MP3 lose quality?

Yes — MP3 is lossy, so some detail is discarded, and converting an MP3 to another MP3 discards a little more on top. Going from a lossless source such as WAV or FLAC only does it once. If you plan to keep editing the audio, choose WAV instead.

How long can a file be?

Audio is decoded fully into memory, so length is limited by your device rather than by us. Songs and short videos are no trouble. A feature-length film or a multi-hour recording may run out of memory — convert it in sections if so.

How long does it take?

Roughly a quarter of the length of the audio — a four-minute song takes about thirty seconds on a typical laptop, and a one-minute clip about eight. The encoding runs in the background so the page stays usable while it works, and you can keep the tab open in another window. It is slower than a site that converts on its own servers, which is the trade for your file never leaving your device.

What does Normalise do?

It raises the whole file so the loudest moment sits just below the maximum, which makes a quiet recording comfortable to listen to without changing the balance between loud and quiet parts. Files that are already loud are left alone.
